Learn About the Salt Lake Valley’s Pioneer History – Visit This is the Place Heritage Park

This is the Place Heritage Park sits where Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon Pioneers in 1847, announced that the Salt Lake valley is where they would settle. “This is the place”, was a phrase remembered as the official moment the Mormon pioneers had reached their new home. Thousands of pioneers came to the valley within a short time following that announcement. Utah celebrates the pioneers’ arrival with a state holiday on July 24th. Visit the park to learn about the history, walk through historic buildings, enjoy the scenery, and participate in a number of events hosted each year!

The Monument

Originally a wooden marker, built by a Boy Scout troop in 1917, it was since replaced by a white stone obelisk that is found East of the original monument. You can find a visitor’s center near the monument as well as a number of statues found around the park. Enjoy discovering the history of the Salt Lake Valley in this beautiful location, near the University of Utah, the Natural History Museum, and just a short drive to other parks and galleries in downtown Salt Lake City, like the free Planetarium. You can also expect expansive parking when you come to visit.

Heritage Village

In addition to the visitor’s center, Heritage Village includes a plaza and several buildings to capture the original settlement, including the Cedar City Tithing Office, Snelgrove Boot Shop, John Pack home, William Atkin home, Brigham Young Academy (BYA), Heber C. Kimball home, P.W. Madsen Furniture Company, and the Deseret Hospital. Buildings can be toured with live actors and items for purchase, to simulate the history of the Pioneers. You can also find the Emery County Cabin, Native American displays, and the Monument Cafe.
